How Do You Choose Your First Table Tennis Table?
For first timers looking to get a table, it might be a little confusing to pick the right one considering the numerous options on the market. Our buyer’s guide below will enlighten you on the important factors to consider when shopping for a table tennis table:
1). Are you playing indoor or outdoor?
Firstly, you need to decided where you intend on using the table. Are you going to play indoor or outdoor?
It is very important for you to know this because although they look the same , indoor and outdoor table differ in the materials used for construction. Outdoor tables are usually built with special coating on the surface to help it withstand extreme weather conditions when kept outside.
2). How much are you willing to spend?
The next thing you should consider is your budget.
How much can you spend on the best table tennis table without feeling the effect (in your pocket)? This is a very important factor because there are several options available at different price points , so you can always choose something within your budget.
Buying a table is just the first step. You need to cultivate a maintenance habit to ensure they last for years to come.
You can start by getting covers (if yours doesn’t come with one) to cover the table wherever you install or store it. To keep it from any unlikely incidents, keep out of the reach of children so they don’t take it apart.
Also , if you have any issues with the set up you should first consult the owners’ manual provided in every purchase or get a sport instructor to help you with the set up. Also, don’t forget to take advantage of the levelers in cases of uneven terrains or say, reduction for shorter players.
Finally, you might be tempted to use your indoor table outside. If you choose to, make sure it is well protected from the weather and restored to a safe storage space after use.

Hey! , I am Roland Campbell , a recreational table tennis player for over 5 years and counting. I do a lot of research on table tennis (Ping Pong) and publish my findings here at Pingthatpong.
Hello Roland. First time buyer, and a Recreational player. Looking for a “Man Cave” item. How about the “Prince” Tables. Specifically the “Prince Tournament 6800 Indoor Table Tennis Table” at $300? (My price range) Thanks for your help.
Hello Art, thanks for your question. Honestly, I know it’s more than the price range you mentioned, but the Joola is not a lot more money in the big picture and it’s a beautiful table. My advice is to save up a little more and just go for the Joola and know you have a great table and you didn’t sacrifice, spent a bunch of money, and have a mediocre table. Hope that helps!

Its a custom table.
Roland – what do you think abt Joola Pro Plus (larger wheels) VS Stiga XTR or XTR Pro? I want best price and durability. Don’t care abt brand. I found the Joola with large wheels cheaper than Stiga. Thanks. Will
Hi Will, yes, this JOOLA table is definitely a good one. I will incorporate it into the review soon, just haven’t gotten around to it. I think it’s a good choice for you needs, go for it!
I also noticed the Joola base takes up less space (base) when folded up in storage. Thanks again. Will

Regarding the Joola Quantum table.
Is that an OUTDOOR or INDOOR table?
(I’m shopping for a table and I’m considering this one).
S. Pats in TN
Roland Campbell says
Hi Sammy, I’m not positive, but I think that’s an older indoor model there you found. I don’t see much information about it anymore, but maybe some outlets still have it. I would recommend sticking with something more recent to make sure you have something recently made and going to last longer for your needs.
If you want to stick with JOOLA for an indoor, here’s one we recommend right now. If you need an outdoor JOOLA table, here’s a solid choice.
If you’re looking for something less expensive, just let me know what you need indoor/outdoor and if you’re open to brand, I’ll recommend some other choices.
Hi. Why are your thoughts in the Joola Berkshire? It would be an outside table with no cover. Thanks!
Roland Campbell says
Hi Debbie, that’s a very interesting table! Given Joola’s usual quality standards and given the materials used on this table, this should be a safe choice for a low-maintenance and durable outside table. We haven’t played on this yet and may review it in the future. But, if the steep price doesn’t scare you off and you’re not concerned about the surface’s play characteristic, it may be worth a shot. Because the surface is concrete, I’m assuming Joola did a good job with it in terms of playing “normal”, but I have to imagine some compromises have to be made. If you want to a closer play surface to normal and that’s important to you to get right, then I would recommend going with one of the outdoor tables we’ve reviewed that are great outdoors but still play extremely well and true.
Kirk Ashy says
hello! I am looking for a table to go on my back porch. Lot’s of space, totally protected, covered, no exposure to the sun, rain, wind, etc… but still it is outside. I am an advanced player so I want as great/ true of an experience as possible. I understand it won’t last forever outside, but that is where it will have to live. After reading and researching I was thinking of the JOOLA 1500 but curious your thoughts. It even crossed my mind to just buy a lower end one just so I have something. Would love to hear your thoughts/recommendations.
Roland Campbell says
Hi Kirk, thanks for the great question. Since the table will be totally protected in terms of direct exposure to the elements, you have a very good situation. The main factor of consideration here is the indirect weather effects on your table. What I mean by that is temperature ranges and humidity. Since you’re not going to experience any direct wind, sun, rain/snow, that’s a great advantage, but you’re still going to expose the table to temp changes day and night and especially humidity (both lack of it and a lot of it). So, ultimately, it comes down to where you live and how much of these temp and moisture ranges the table will experience. Obviously, the extremes in the US are living in Arizona (dry desert) or Florida (humid coastal). Being an advanced player, you definitely appreciate the bounce and overall feel of the table surface and everything it offers. So, if it were me, I rather get an awesome table that gives me the kind of play I want and not have it last forever rather than compromise the enjoyment of my play just to worry less about the cost. It’s a personal decision, but it sounds like you look at it the same way I do. I hope this was helpful. If you wipe down your table and try to look after it and if you don’t live somewhere with an extreme climate, I hope the table will last many years for you!
Kirk Ashy says
this is incredibly helpful. thanks you so much! I am in Austin TX FYI… It gets hot here!
